How Do I Become a Christian?

Many people reject or are slow in coming to Christ because of how they know that genuine salvation will change the way they are living their life. The greatest piece of advice we could ever give to someone who is searching for truth in Christ is to stop considering all of the things they think they are going to lose and start considering all the things God promised they will gain if they would just surrender their whole heart and soul to the Lord Jesus. If this is something you are searching for, below is some additional direction and Scripture that will help guide you.

1) Understand that God loves you.

The Bible says in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

It is hard to believe that someone could love us so much but the Bible assures us that that’s exactly what happened when Jesus left heaven and came to earth to die for our sin. Someone once said, “Once I understood that I was a part of the “whosoever,” the rest came easy.” Always remember that God loves you, and there is nothing you can ever do to change that.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 3:16

2) Understand that you are sinner.

The first step of receiving salvation is understanding that you need salvation. Because of the sin of Adam in the Garden of Eden, a sin nature has been passed down to all of humanity. We are all sinners!

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God

Romans 3:23

3) Understand that sin must be paid for.

Just as much as we earn a paycheck for completing a job, we earn a penalty for committing sin. God’s penalty for sin is eternal death and destruction in hell, and someone will have to pay that penalty. The bill for our sin will come due one day.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:23

4) Understand that Christ died to pay for your sin and rose again from the grave to claim victory over it.

Even while we were in our guilty state of sin, God still loved us. What an amazing thought! He loved us so much that He sent His only Son Jesus to pay that penalty that we owed. Jesus Christ shed His blood and gave His life on the cross of Calvary so we would not have to. No matter how confused you may be about spiritual or religious things, just always remember that you are a sinner and you need a Savior, and that’s who Jesus is.

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8

5) Repent and believe on Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

Do not over-complicate salvation. God promises us that if we will just admit that we are a sinner, believe that the cross of Christ is the only way and call upon Jesus to come into our hearts and save us, we will be saved.

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Romans 10:9-10
